Off-label use of medications
Some medications FOLX clinicians prescribe are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a different condition than the one they are prescribed for. This is called off-label use. It includes many hormones used in gender-affirming hormone therapy and some treatments for menopause and low libido.
Off-label prescribing is legal and common in the United States. A licensed clinician may prescribe a medication off-label when current evidence and clinical guidelines support its use for you.
Your clinician decides what is right for you
Whether a medication is prescribed, and at what dose, is decided by a licensed clinician after reviewing your health history. Before you start treatment, your clinician will explain the expected benefits, risks and alternatives, including whether a medication is being used off-label.
